Ever More Dynamic Svalbard-Barents Sea Ice Sheet?
Historical, Current and Future Perspectives

Our perception of the Late Quaternary Svalbard-Barents Sea Ice Sheet
(SBIS) has changed considerably through decades of research. Current and
past reconstructions of the SBIS reflect how our ideas and paradigms
have developed with accumulation of more data and better understanding
of ice sheet behaviour in time and space. The lecture will briefly
review the history of ideas on the SBIS and outline recent developments
in our understanding of the ice sheet history. It will be argued that we
are in the process of a paradigm change, where contradictory
stratigraphical evidence and ice sheet reconstructions can be
accommodated for by a much more dynamic ice sheet behaviour than
previously recognized.
